A Buddhist monk sits peacefully at the entrance of one of the doors on the Peace pagoda in Brisbane's South Bank area. Constructed by renowned German architect Jochen Reier, this magnificent structure was built on behalf of the Kingdom of Nepal. An enormous quantity of 80 tonnes of indigenous Nepalese timber were sourced from the dense Terai jungle forest of Nepal and transported to the capital city Kathmandu, where a team of 160 skilled Nepalese workers spent two years crafting its intricately designed elements. These carefully crafted components were then shipped to Australia in three large containers - two 40-footers and one 20-footer - before being assembled at the Expo site by a small group of Australian laborers under the supervision of Nepalese experts. The final assembly for World Expo '88 was completed within just a few days.
