PCB Drill Press

PCB Drill Press

This is a straightforward PCB or model makers drill press that I opted to simplify by using a basic push lever instead of a complicated rack and pinion system. There are two motor mounts provided: one standard mount and another with a hole to accommodate a subminiature toggle switch. The pillars are constructed from 5mm rod salvaged from an old printer. You will need to smooth the sliding parts with a needle file to ensure a precise fit, allowing them to slide smoothly without being loose. A light spray of silicone furniture polish applied after completion will also help to lubricate them. A bottle of hand wash provided the spring for this project. The base used is a perspex block designed specifically for rubber stamping. When drilling and tapping holes, do so slowly, as excessive heat can cause distortion around the hole. If you notice any signs of distortion, stop immediately and let everything cool before continuing. I have included an alternative base design for those who prefer to print their own. The motor and chuck were a budget-friendly £5 purchase from China, but surprisingly, the chuck runs with remarkable accuracy. You can find similar drill sets on eBay, including this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Electric-Hand-Drill-set-DC12V-Motor-Twist-Drill-Bit-Keyless-Chuck-Grinder-Chuck/172443189940?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649 After further research, I discovered that the paper feed motor from a HP printer has a similar diameter but offers slightly more power. However, you won't need this level of power for drilling PCBs. When using your chosen power source, consider adding a diode across the motor terminals to regulate the flow of electricity. All screws used in this project are 4mm pan head screws. I have since added a top component to the drill press that accommodates a rocker switch requiring a 6.8 x 19mm cutout.
