The River or Patrol Boat is referred to as a small rigid-hulled patrol boat used by the United States Navy during the Vietnam War from March 1966 until the end of 1971. These boats were part of a force that grew to 250 units, making them the most common type in the River Patrol Force, Task Force 116 and used to inspect river traffic in areas like the Mekong Delta, the Rung Sat Special Zone, the Saigon River and I Corps. This boat was extremely versatile with its fiberglass hull and water jet drive which enabled it to operate smoothly through shallow rivers that are full of weeds. When fully loaded, it drew only two feet of water. Its drives could pivot in a matter of seconds allowing for direction reversal or stopping abruptly from full speed in mere boat lengths. Patrol Boats remained in operation with the U.S. Naval Reserve until 1995 at Mare Island, California just before the base's closure due to BRAC action that same year. Some boats are currently displayed in museums while others have made their way into private hands.
