The Navy used the designation Patrol Boat River or PBR for a small boat used in the Vietnam War from March 1966 until the end of 1971. This boat was deployed in a force growing to 250 boats, making it the most common craft in Task Force 116 and the River Patrol Force. It stopped and searched river traffic in areas like the Mekong Delta, Rung Sat Special Zone, Saigon River and I Corps. The PBR is a versatile boat with a fiberglass hull and water jet drive that allows it to operate in shallow, weed-choked rivers. It can draw only two feet of water fully loaded. The drives enable it to reverse direction quickly, turn the boat within its length or come to a stop from full speed in just a few lengths. US Naval Reservists operated these boats with up to 1995 at Mare Island, California prior to the base's closure due to BRAC action that year. Some PBRs are in museums and others are owned privately.
