11.06.2019 Update: V2 BED Bracket, V2 Caliper Bracket and V2 Vernier Clip is designed for the Backside Version of a DRO with Caliper. To install this mod, you'll need a Nut and Bolt to lock the Caliper Bracket Slider in place, as well as a 2x2cm steel or aluminum profile. 19.06.2019 Update: All files have been revised, actual photos have been added, and the text has been reformatted for easier reading. Introduction This is a "work in progress," so be sure to double-check the information and dimensions before proceeding. Use this mod at your own risk, and think carefully about what you're doing. Improper installation may void your warranty. These mods are designed specifically for my Paulimot PM2700 lathe, which is a bit larger than the famous mini lathe from the same manufacturer. I had to convert mine to 220V from its original 400V setup, so I rewired the controls and added a frequency modulation system that converts one phase to three-phase output. I used a Siemens Sinamics G110 with a G110 Basic Operator Panel and installed it in the wire box. The cost of this upgrade is higher than the standard Chinese variant, but keep in mind that Siemens uses tested and certified components. Be sure to ground the full machine properly and follow safety guidelines when making these modifications. The switches and controls were originally designed for 400V, so I replaced them with new ones and added a potentiometer to achieve variable control within ±15% of range for each gear. These controls can be integrated into the pinout and pinin on the G110 without issues. I also configured a "slowup" and "slowdown" function provided by the G110, which gradually increases or decreases the motor speed when turning the machine on. This feature helps prevent accidents if you forget to remove the chuck key or if something else becomes dislodged during operation. The Mods DRO with Caliper Bracket This V2 BED Bracket is designed for the Backside Version of a DRO with Caliper. To install this mod, you'll need a Nut and Bolt to lock the Caliper Bracket Slider in place, as well as a 2x2cm steel or aluminum profile. Caliper Bracket The V2 Caliper Bracket is designed specifically for the Paulimot PM2700 lathe. It can be bolted into place using all four screws or just two, whichever you prefer. A simple hole in the Vernier at the right height allows for quick removal of the caliper when more clearance is needed. Lathe Conversion 220V These control panels were designed specifically for my Paulimot PM2700 lathe and are used to power up, reverse, and perform other functions. The third knob is still a mystery to me, but I'm sure it serves a purpose! Lathe Microscope This mod was inspired by Dan Gelbart's YouTube instructions (look him up if you're interested). It's a mount that fits onto the Paulimot Quick toolpost between two screws and helps align cutting tools with absolute accuracy. This is particularly useful when working with bronze or copper-based alloys, as it allows for precise control over material removal. Lathe RPM A potential future mod involves attaching an inductive sensor to measure the number of screw passes by on the clip and display the result on a 0.97" screen using an Arduino. However, I never completed this project due to issues with accurately measuring time to achieve consistent readings. If you're interested in taking on this challenge, please let me know! Print Settings I used a Prusa i3 MK3 printer for these mods, but any other printer will do. My recommended print settings include 4-5 outer perimeters and shells on all sides, as well as 15-25% infill. Filament was PLA.
