The human body has a unique composition of cells that are essential to its functioning. The majority of these cells are called somatic cells and they make up about 95 percent of an individual's total cell count. There are three main types of somatic cells in the human body: epithelial, connective tissue, and muscle cells. Epithelial cells form a protective layer on the surface of various organs and glands throughout the body. Connective tissue cells provide structural support to various parts of the body including bone, cartilage, and fat. Muscle cells are responsible for facilitating movement within the human body through the contraction and relaxation of muscles. Somatic cells also play a critical role in reproduction as they produce gametes or sex cells that are essential for fertilization during conception. These somatic cells then develop into zygotes after successful fertilization, which eventually grow into fully formed babies.
