18th C. English Oakeshott Collection Catalogue Number: OC044 A prime example of the iconic Pattern 1796 Light Cavalry Saber, perfectly matched with its original scabbard and sword knot. The Pattern 1796 marked a significant attempt to standardize British cavalry swords at the end of the 18th Century, eclipsing the earlier Pattern 1788. Characterized by an accentuated curve, this blade excels in close combat situations. This exceptional piece boasts rich decorations, featuring a blue and gilt blade adorned with a Royal Cypher, crown, drums, and banners, along with intricate foliage across the blued scrollwork background. The grip is expertly crafted from shark skin, wrapped with wire to provide a secure hold even when wet. The sword knot was designed to be worn around the wrist, preventing the weapon's loss in case of disengagement during combat.
