Passive Dust Shoe for CNC Router (Low Noise)
thingiverse
Human: The CNC router spindle dust shoe design produces roughly 60% less noise than a dust extractor or vacuum cleaner. Initially, I designed the dust shoe to be powered by a vacuum cleaner, which worked extremely well but was hindered by the motor's noise. After upgrading to a water-cooled brushless router spindle and enjoying its low-noise benefits, running a vacuum cleaner to operate the dust shoe would destroy this quiet atmosphere. By accident, I forgot to attach the vacuum hose to the spindle, only to be showered with small wood chips and dust. The cutter, nut, and shaft rotation formed a vortex that lifted smaller wood chips and dust, collecting at least some of the fine particles. This incident led me to think about ways to induce a greater updraft using the spindle motor. If I could collect the smaller particles, then using a timer every so many minutes, I could switch on the vacuum for a period and back off to collect larger particles. With this idea in mind, I started designing a suitable impeller after three attempts, resulting in a working dust extractor without needing to run a vacuum cleaner at all. Stage 2: I have since ordered a 12V 20W brushless dust turbine fan air blower with a built-in PWM speed controller from Ali Express. This will be mounted on top of my cyclonic dust extractor, a modified Dyson Vacuum mounted on a 20L screw-top drum. I hope to assist the spindle blower by running the 12V vacuum motor in a pull/suck configuration and adjusting the speed to the required level. This design is for a 65mm dia 800W water-cooled spindle; you will need to modify it to suit your spindle. The brush is from an old vacuum cleaner cornice, etc., brush. I used black neoprene foam from my new video card box for the seal. If you like this, you may be interested in my Dyson MOD: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3821185 and https://youtu.be/u2YLTJyDQiE
