The LiDAR view of Parys Copper Mines on Parys Mountain, Anglesey, showcases a rich history of copper extraction dating back to the Early Bronze Age around 3500 BC. The initial mining activities took place on the hillside, yielding copper ingots and evidence of smelting from the Roman period found on the northern side. A significant period of copper extraction occurred between 1768 and 1904 when a near-surface body of copper ore was discovered in what is now known as The Great Lode. Shallow surface workings expanded into massive opencast pits, including The Great Opencast and Mona opencast, while deeper shafts explored veins until the mine ceased operations. As the largest copper mine in Europe during the 1780s, Parys Mountain's ore was transported to Lancashire and South Wales for smelting. Today, Anglesey Mining plc is reassessing mining possibilities if extraction becomes financially feasible.
