Parthenon Frieze _ North XLI, 112-113-114
myminifactory
The British Museum proudly showcases half of the North frieze's grandeur, while the Acropolis museum displays the remaining portion. The total length of this magnificent piece is an impressive 58.70 meters. Scenes unfold at the northwest corner of the opisthonaos, seamlessly connecting to the west side procession that has already commenced, stretching from block N XLVII all the way to block N I. As the action unfolds, it transitions smoothly from quiet preparation to a thrilling gallop. Horsemen are depicted riding in groups of seven or eight, with their horses partly overlapping each other, creating a continuous flow that's only interrupted by the marshal on block XXXIV. Despite the repetition, variety is maintained through differences in garment, stance, and gesture among the horsemen, as well as occasional depictions of riders turning to look back. The Parthenon frieze forms a continuous band encircling the upper part of the cella within the outer colonnade, featuring low-relief scenes that tell the story of the procession toward the Acropolis during the Great Panathenaia, a grand celebration honoring Athena's birthday.
