Five girls walk in single file. The foremost carries a thymiaterion, a stand for burning incense. The rest carry jugs or bowls for pouring liquid sacrifices. The east frieze is comprised of eight to nine blocks that are considerably longer than the other sides' blocks. Research has shown that VII and VIII form a single block. Middle block V measures 4.50 m in length, while corner blocks are narrow because they're actually the narrow ends of block I of the north frieze and block XLVII of the south frieze. Surviving blocks and fragments are scattered among various museums: II and VI are located on the Acropolis; blocks I, III-V, VIII can be found in the British Museum; VII is housed in the Louvre. Several fragments are stored in the British Museum, while others are kept in the Archaeological Museum of Palermo. In contrast to the west frieze, the east frieze has a certain symmetry of composition since it's the focal point of the processions on other sides. The Parthenon frieze forms a continuous band with scenes in low relief that encircles the upper part of the cella within the outer colonnade. The theme represented is the procession toward the Acropolis during the Great Panathenaia, a commemoration of Athena's birthday.
