Five girls walk in procession carrying jugs (oinochai) for pouring liquid sacrifices. The east frieze consists of eight or nine blocks that are significantly longer than the blocks on other sides. Research has confirmed that VII and VIII formed a single block. Block V, located in the middle, measures 4.50 m. in length, while corner blocks are narrow due to being part of larger blocks from the north frieze (block I) and south frieze (block XLVII). The surviving blocks and fragments are scattered among various museums: blocks II and VI remain at the Acropolis, blocks I, III-V, VIII at the British Museum, block VII at the Louvre. A number of fragments also reside in the British Museum and Archaeological Museum of Palermo. Unlike the west frieze, the east frieze displays a certain symmetry of composition as it serves as the focal point for processions from other sides. The Parthenon's frieze forms a continuous band with low-relief scenes encircling the upper part of the cella within the outer colonnade. The theme depicted is the procession toward the Acropolis that took place during the Great Panathenaia, commemorating the goddess Athena's birthday.
