Part of Crouching Venus at The Louvre, Paris

This marble fragment is part of a sculpture of Aphrodite crouched in a provocative pose. It's one of many replicas called 'Aphrodite Crouching', a stunning piece of Greek art created around 250 BC by the skilled artist Doidalsas of Bithynia. The Crouching Venus is a classic Hellenistic model depicting a surprised Venus mid-bath, her head turned to the right and her right arm reaching up to cover her breasts as she crouches low on her right knee. Judging from the numerous copies excavated on Roman sites in Italy and France, this version of Venus was incredibly popular among ancient Romans. Many prominent collections have featured examples of the Crouching Venus, influencing modern sculptors since Giambologna and inspiring artists like Martin Heemskerck to create their own renderings, including his famous drawing of the Farnese Crouching Venus now housed in Naples.
