One of Canova's most renowned works portrays Paris judging which goddess, Juno, Minerva, or Venus, was the most beautiful. Renowned for his striking looks, Paris sports the Phrygian cap typically worn in present-day Turkey, where he resided. His tranquil posture and serene expression give no indication of the consequences to come; once he awarded the golden apple concealed behind his back to Venus and accepted her bribe of Helen, wife of Menelaus, the devastating Trojan War unfolded. Canova crafted the initial version of this subject for Joséphine de Beauharnais between 1808 and 1812; it is now housed in the Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg. Another was created for Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and is currently displayed in Munich. Our new acquisition was documented as unfinished at Canova's studio upon his death in 1822. Alongside a Venus (acc. no. 2003.21.1), it was completed by the sculptor's assistants the following year on commission from the third marquis of Londonderry, who returned to England through Rome after representing his country at the Congress of Vienna.
