Parametric Wine Glass and Bowls

The rotate_extrude function in openSCAD offers remarkable possibilities. It can replace traditional potter's wheels and woodworker's lathes. To create a pot or bowl, simply draw a 2D profile of an item, convert it to a polygon, then apply rotate_extrude. An example program demonstrates its versatility by making wine glasses, drink cups, and bowls. Output files include wine_glass.stl, drink_cup_5oz.stl, small_bowl.stl, and cat_food_dish.stl. Parameters for each output are included as comments in the openSCAD file make_wine_glass.scad. This program was designed to produce a stemmed wine glass. Seven parameters must be set: base diameter and thickness, stem diameter and length, cup height and angle, and cup wall thickness. Alternatively, it can create a bowl by shortening the stem length and making it equal to the base diameter. A glass is essentially a bowl with a nearly 90-degree angle. The cat food dish has an 85-degree angle for spillage reduction. Bowls with angles above 90 degrees may invert, creating weak joins between the original and inverted bowls.
