Parametric Wine Charm with proportional font
thingiverse
I wanted to make wine charms for a party, so I looked at my old version and was annoyed by the bad kerning of the font. Investigated whether there isn't something to improve on that, and lo and behold, OpenSCAD now has a builtin text() function that make the old write module superfluous and it works with any font installed on your machine. Found a neat trick to get the footprint of the text calculated (credit to https://mastering-openscad.eu/buch/example_06/ ) so the base plate automatically resizes to whatever length text or font. I tried out whether a border makes it look better (not really, but left the option in), and found that printing it with a filament change from white to blue made the nicest looking version. Played around with a lot of fonts, found that the Windows font Impact looked the best when printed - fonts like Broadway with lots of very thin lines do not print well, at all.
