This summer, Formlabs hosted The Digital Factory, a conference about digital manufacturing at the MIT Media Lab, where hundreds of guests gathered to explore the future of innovation. We envisioned mass-produced 3D printed parts as an ideal souvenir for attendees, reflecting the limitless possibilities of digital fabrication. Since the digital factory of the future promises mass customization at no extra cost, we created hundreds of design options for a one-of-a-kind pen that each attendee could take home. Our goal was to design everyday objects that cater specifically to individual users, pushing the boundaries of what is possible with parametric design. We have included eight unique parametrically generated designs, along with the Grasshopper definition, so you can customize and print your own one-of-a-kind pen. These pens are designed to use standard Bic Ballpoint Pen cartridges. The Grasshopper Definition These custom pens were generated using the powerful Grasshopper plugin for Rhino, a tool that empowers users to create complex designs with ease. To access this definition, follow these simple steps: 1. Download a free trial of Rhino and unlock its full potential. 2. Install the free Grasshopper plugin, which will become your new design companion. 3. Open the definition file and begin exploring the endless possibilities of parametric design. 4. Use the built-in sliders to drag and preview various settings, allowing you to tailor your design with precision. 5. Right-click and Bake to finalize your design, ensuring a seamless transition from concept to reality. 6. Select Model to visualize your creation in stunning detail. 7. Export your design in STL format by navigating to File > Export Selected. 8. Print your masterpiece using your favorite 3D printer, bringing your vision to life. 9. Share your model with the world on Pinshape, inspiring others to push the boundaries of innovation.
