An O-ring, also referred to as a packing or toric joint, is a torus-shaped mechanical gasket. It's constructed from an elastomer loop with a circular cross-section that's seated in a groove and compressed during assembly between two or more parts, forming a seal at the interface. O-rings can be employed in both static and dynamic applications where there is relative motion among the involved components; examples of the latter include rotating pump shafts and hydraulic cylinder pistons.
