Parachute Roundabout
thingiverse
The beloved Parachute Roundabout model, now a distant memory, once existed in Al-Wakrah city, Qatar. We who call Qatar home still miss it deeply. Part of the larger augmented reality project In Memory of the Roundabouts, this critical design brings to life virtual iconic structures of the city, allowing us to relive and re-establish those vital emotional connections to cherished memories. In this way, the Parachute Roundabout model prompts us to reflect on the significance of these structures, raising important questions about their enduring value. By presenting a semi-transparent form with an angelic halo and wings, we're reminded of its vanished presence. This digital rendition can be freely adjusted and repositioned at any time by the user. With this ability comes the opportunity to reimagine the Parachutie Roundabout in new contexts, giving users the chance to reignite their emotional connections to it. To construct the 3D model, we carefully studied older photographs of the original roundabout. Using Adobe Illustrator CC, we illustrated the outlines and exported them as an SVG file, which was then imported into 123D Design. From there, we extruded the illustration to create a 3D model. All elements were merged into one solid piece for seamless 3D printing. High-quality printing requires strong support material. This ensures a sturdy and accurate representation of our nostalgic roundabout design.
