Use this interactive tool to gain an intuitive grasp of how the "b" coefficient of a quadratic function impacts the graphed parabola. Check out this quick video overview: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmrzcR4H6xw A quadratic equation takes the form: y = ax^2 + bx + c The "a" coefficient expands or compresses the parabola vertically. The "c" coefficient shifts the parabola up and down, both straightforward concepts to grasp. However, the "b" coefficient requires a bit more thought. Utilize this interactive tool to develop an understanding of its effects. For educators, I've included the following resources: 1) Non-verbal assembly instructions in PDF format. This allows students to practice following visual cues. 2) An Exploration Guide (PDF file) with questions suitable for project-based learners investigating parabolas using this interactive tool. 3) A game-based virtual manipulative accessible online: http://sso.stmath.com/demo/parabola/ParabolaManipulative.html The Common Core standards associated with this interactive tool are F_IF.7, G_GPE_3.1 (California addition), and G_GPE.1 and G_GPE.2. The source files in SketchUp are available in a zip archive.
