Papyrella reed raft No.: NMM/EM/151 Place of acquisition: Greece, Corfu Island Dimensions: length 2.34 m, width 1.16 m, height 0.47 m Origin: Donated by Mrs Valerie Fenwick, Blaxhall, Suffolk, the United Kingdom Description: A raft classified as a reed raft was used on Corfu Island off north-western Greece coast until mid-1980s. Though the name papyrella suggests the use of papyrus, in actual fact the material was dried stems of giant Italian fennel (Ferula communis). Their bundles were tied in a triangular framework made from cypress rods and planks. It served for 20 years, while reeds were changed every 2-3 years. Usually a raft was used on closed waters, but sometimes also for lobster fishery in the Ionian Sea. It was propelled by a double bladed paddle or punting pole. After each use it needed drying.
