This is followup on creating regular dodecahedron with 12 regular pentagon faces, with edges of toothpicks:https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/english-forum-awesome-prints-hall-of-fame/toothpick-polyhedra-fullerenes/#post-606910 Dodecahedron (C20)This time 6mm(5.65mm) outer(inner) diameter paper drinking straws are used for the edges. The OpenSCAD model connector allows for any length of straw with 5.65mm inner diameter. In case of different inner diameter just adapt vaiables R (and r).The model is 3Dprinted with brim to work with many connectors (here 20) printed in single print. After removing brim (even with pliers) a small flat part a little outside the bottom cylinder. For that reason a 0.2mm smaller radius is used to compensate. The three connectors are created by (convex) “hull” function on two spheres at both ends. The half sphere at end of a connector makes it easy to move the staw over initially. The center sphere where the connectors join and the two upper sphere have radius R (2.8mm, up to 0.05mm what I measured), only the 4th sphere has a 0.2mm reduced radius.I started with straws of 5 colors and built a 1st pentagon with the connectors. Then I placed a straw on an open end with the color of straw on opposite side of the pentagon. This construction can be continued and used 6 straws of a single color, with never meeting same colored straws at one of the 20 connectors.Truncated icosahedron (C60)I modidified the OpenSCAD file (c60.scad) for the angles needed for two edges between pentagon and hexagon each, and an edge between two hexagons, end exported connector to c60.stl. The MINI+ gcode file prints 30 connectors, so has to be printed twice for 60 needed C60 connectors. Details on angles and chosen paper straw coloring strategy in this posting:https://forum.prusa3d.com/forum/english-forum-awesome-prints-hall-of-fame/toothpick-polyhedra-fullerenes/#post-606733Remarks on new cover photo here:https://twitter.com/HermannSW/status/1527351459263631360The math added in next posting of that thread, basically this:
