Paper cup holder. An exercise in Super Glue
thingiverse
This ingenious paper cup holder showcases Clifford Smyth's innovative method of dissecting a design into segments that can be printed on their sides - thereby increasing strength - and rapidly assembled with Super Glue. For further details, please refer to my blog on this subject. Update: I have now switched to E6000 Craft glue, as it excels at bonding parts featuring rough surfaces and affords me more time to secure the part before the adhesive sets. IMPORTANT NOTE: Daily use of this holder is not recommended unless a Food-Safe print has been created. Even non-toxic prints are excessively porous, allowing bacteria and fungus to thrive. I firmly believe that Shapeways can produce Food-Safe prints. Print Settings Printer Brand: LulzBot Printer: Mini Rafts: No Supports: No Notes: This part is designed to utilize no support whatsoever. The square tube, when cut in half diagonally, generates walls at a 45-degree angle. Most 3D printers can successfully print a wall at 45 degrees without the need for supports. Post-Printing Following printing, join the two halves together with a small amount of Super Glue. Carefully adhere to all precautions outlined on the Super Glue bottle. How I Designed This As evident from the screen shots, my process began with designing the part, then creating a block that I subtracted from the design to produce one of the two halves intended for printing. I repeated this procedure to create the other half. I printed the parts on their sides, thereby maximizing strength and eliminating support structures altogether.
