The Panzer II is a widely recognized name for a series of German tanks utilized during World War II. Officially known as Panzerkampfwagen II, this designation is abbreviated to PzKpfw II in military contexts. Initially intended as a temporary measure until more advanced models became available, the Panzer II surprisingly played a significant role in the early stages of World War II, particularly during the Polish and French campaigns. As the most abundant tank within German Panzer divisions at the onset of the French invasion, it saw extensive use on both the North African front against Western Allies and the Eastern Front against Soviet forces.
