The Panzer I, an early German light tank, was produced in the 1930s and named Panzerkampfwagen I or PzKpfw I. Manufactured from 1934, it initially served as a training vehicle but saw action in Spain during the Civil War and across Europe during WWII. Despite limitations such as thin armor and light armament, it formed a significant portion of Germany's tank force between 1939-1941. The PzKpfw I's impact on early Nazi victories was substantial, though it would be replaced by more advanced tanks. Its design also led to the production of tank destroyers and assault guns by 1941. Efforts were made throughout its service history to upgrade the PzKpfw I, even by foreign forces. Service in Spain continued until 1954.
