The Panzer I Ausf. F, designed as an infantry support tank, boasted a maximum armor thickness of 80 millimeters (3.15 inches), weighing between 18-21 tonnes. It was armed with two 7.92 mm MG-34s and thirty were produced in 1940; however, a subsequent order for 100 units was later canceled. A new 150 horsepower Maybach HL45 Otto engine was utilized to counterbalance the increased weight, enabling a maximum road speed of 25 km/h (15.5 mph). Unlike its predecessor, the Ausf. F had five overlapping road wheels per side instead of interleaved units. Eight of these tanks were sent to the 1st Panzer Division in 1943 and participated in the Battle of Kursk. The remaining 22 tanks were distributed among various army schools for training and evaluation purposes.
