I'd like to give thanks to Mustang Dave for tracking down that awesome find, as well as Adam Beamish who originally sculpted this impressive bust in the first place. I took the sculpture into Blender (I'm still dealing with some frustrations when using zbrush...) and gave it a few tweaks by increasing the subdivision level, then tried my hand at resculpting some of the lost details. My plan was to get this printed out really big, so I made a point of avoiding sanding as much as possible. Yes, the file size did jump significantly (by 36 times), but so did the quality of the resulting print. My original goal was to leave the original mesh intact, and it held up amazingly well - so I only added some details like the spike liners on the shoulders and defined muscles along the back and front, then gave him some shape. My main motivation for doing this is to prevent prints with sharp edges and ensure that my printer always produces smooth, rounded shapes. As you might expect, the Flashforge seems to have a preference for clean, rounded forms over low-resolution models with minimal vertices. I totally get it - small, high-quality meshes are definitely a must-have for many fans out there (Panthro's awesome print is proof of that). At this point after two years, I've simply had enough of sanding my prints; the closer to perfect they can come right off the printer, the better. And I'd be lying if I said slicing big meshes wasn't intimidating at all... but trust me, it's totally manageable!
