It was created by the French tire company Michelin in 1889 as a way to encourage people to take road trips and use their tires. The first edition of the guide contained information about hotels and mechanics, but it did not include restaurant ratings. The idea for the star system came later, with three stars indicating an "excellent cuisine, worth a special journey."
