Panel depicting The Last Judgement at The British Museum, London
myminifactory
This alabaster panel would have been part of an altar depicting the Last Judgement. This event was believed in the Middle Ages to be preceded by fifteen distinct signs, with this being one of them. The sign shows men and women wandering aimlessly, unable to communicate with each other. The sculptor convincingly portrays their inability to interact. There are seven figures, including two fashionable women adorned with horned headdresses. Their eyes do not meet, and their hands are raised to touch or rest on each other's shoulders. This has been misidentified as the tenth sign of the Last Judgement. It is more likely to be the thirteenth sign, where all stars fall from Heaven.
