Pancreatic beta cell

Pancreatic beta cell

Beta cells burst with secretory granules packed tightly with insulin. These granules surge to the cell's surface when glucose levels skyrocket. The lopsided distribution of these granules stems from a transformed cell line that's undergone significant changes in shape. The model draws on confocal microscopy data courtesy of Professor Rory Duncan from Heriot-Watt University, with gratitude extended to Fiona McCulloch and Professor Gwyn Gould of the School of Life Sciences at Glasgow University.
