If you ever wondered where baby satyrs came from, this sculpture should settle your curiosity! Pan was a satyr, a half-man, half-goat woodland god who roamed the forests with ease. Here, he and his goat companion share a tender gaze (check out the plaque at The Royal Ontario Museum in Canada for more details). This isn't a scene of animal lust, but rather an exploration of Roman mythology's deepest secrets. This sculpture has been shocking visitors since it was unearthed from the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum, near Pompeii, back in 1752. The original artwork was stored in a special room at the Naples Museum with restricted access - a gabinetto segreto (secret cabinet) - alongside other erotic antiquities. This object is part of "Scan The World", a non-profit initiative by MyMiniFactory that aims to create a digital archive of fully 3D printable sculptures, artworks, and landmarks from around the world for everyone's free access. Scan The World is an open-source community effort where you can contribute interesting items from your surroundings by emailing stw@myminifactory.com to learn how you can help!
