Pamban Swamigal emerged sometime between 1848 and 1850 in a Saivite family within the town of Rameswaram, which then comprised part of the Ramnad District. He was christened Appāvu but later became known as Pamban Swamigal due to his lifelong residence on Pamban Island. A visionary predicted that AppÄāvu would become a towering figure in the realms of words and wisdom. As a student, AppÄāvu excelled in academics and extracurricular activities, consistently ranking high in Tamil and English. By the age of thirteen, on a Friday at sunrise, AppÄāvu had a profound vision that compelled him to compose poems honoring Lord KumÄāraguru. He scribbled these poems daily on palm leaves using his trusty pen within his coconut estate. For 100 consecutive days, he penned one poem each morning before lunch, consecrating each decad with the revered name of Arunagiri NÄāthar, his mental guru. Upon reading AppÄāvu's poetry, a temple priest named Seddu Madhava Iyer was astonished by the young boy's exceptional knowledge of Tamil and his unwavering devotion to Lord Murugan. Later, AppÄāvu received sacred guidance on the six-letter mantra from Sethu Madhava Iyer at Agni TÄīrtham during Vijaya Dasami celebrations by the Rameswaram seashore temple, where he was also taught Sanskrit.
