Paleogeography of the Paleogene (Eocene - 50 Ma) During this period, the continents were still in a state of significant movement and change, with many landmasses slowly drifting apart. The supercontinent of Gondwana was beginning to break up into smaller components, including Africa, South America, Australia, and Antarctica. At the same time, the northern supercontinent of Laurasia was starting to take shape, comprising modern-day Europe and Asia. The global ocean, which had expanded significantly during the Paleozoic era, continued to grow as the continents drifted apart. The Atlantic Ocean was still relatively narrow, but it would eventually become a major body of water. The Indian subcontinent, which had separated from Africa during the breakup of Gondwana, began its northward journey towards Asia. Climate-wise, the Eocene epoch was characterized by a warm and humid environment. Fossil evidence suggests that many regions were covered in lush vegetation, with vast forests dominating the landscapes. This period also saw the emergence of modern coral reefs, as well as the development of early modern marine life forms such as dolphins and whales. As for the geology of this era, the Paleogene was marked by significant volcanic activity. Volcanic eruptions were common, producing large amounts of lava and ash that would eventually form new rock formations. This period also saw the formation of many mountain ranges, including the Himalayas, which began to rise as a result of tectonic plate interactions. Overall, the Paleogene epoch was a time of significant change and transformation on Earth. The continents continued to move apart, oceans expanded, and climate conditions shifted, all of which would have profound impacts on the planet's ecosystems and geology for millions of years to come.
