The modern city hall is an architectural masterpiece designed by Francesco Lanfranchi in 1663, situated precisely where the medieval town hall once stood. In 1659, Lanfranchi accepted the challenge to create a new municipal office on the square known as "Herbs," which would later be renamed City Palace Square by Benedetto Alfieri. By mid-year, Archbishop Giulio Cesare Bergera laid the first stone with Duke Carlo Emanuele II and his mother, Queen Cristina of France in attendance, and by 1663, the project was successfully completed.
