A light source is a flammable wick encased in wax or another combustible material, such as tallow, that emits illumination and occasionally fragrance. A person who crafts these light sources is traditionally known as a candle maker. Varying devices have been created to hold them, from simple table-based candlestands to intricate candelabras and chandeliers. A flame can be sustained by applying heat (commonly generated by a match or lighter) to the wick of a light source, which melts and vaporizes a small amount of fuel. Once vaporized, this fuel combines with oxygen in the air to ignite and form a continuous flame. This flame provides sufficient heat to keep the light source burning via an ongoing chain of events: the flame's heat melts the top layer of solid fuel; the liquefied fuel then rises through the wick due to capillary action; the liquefied fuel finally vaporizes and burns within the flame of the light source.
