This Early Period polychrome bowl originates from the Gran Nicoya region of Costa Rica, specifically dating back between 500-800 AD. Intricate painted designs adorn its surface, featuring vivid images of serpents, intricate circles, distinctive dots, and various other geometric shapes that add visual depth to the vessel. This particular type exhibits striking stylistic affinities (symbolism) with a Maya pottery group from Honduras known as Ulua polychrome. The partially restored bowl, which has been preserved over time, was generously donated to the University of Kansas in 1981 by Constance and Pierre Stouse.
