In celebration of the Grasshopper beta release for Rhinoceros 3D OSX, I decided to create a quick 2016 remix to test some selective patterning techniques using a voronoi pattern this time around. Blending of surfaces was done in Zbrush by hand-masking important details. Print Settings Printer Brand: MakerBot Printer: MakerBot Replicator Rafts: No Supports: No Resolution: 0.2mm Infill: 21 Notes: It prints fine at this scale, but going too small may result in thin spokes that are difficult to print. I sliced the file with Simplify3D using a 0.2mm layer height, 0.4mm nozzle at 55mm/s and 150mm/s travel speed without support. Printed in PLA. How I Designed This I added a generated voronoi intersection on the surface of the object, then created curves from the intersections, and pipes from the curves. Both density and thickness can be changed independently. Other models and surfaces can be intersected that are not voronoi. The first test involved thickening floating sections to match pipe thicknesses, and only creating intersections with voronoi where remaining surfaces would have been. The model was then taken into Zbrush, where the mesh was recalculated as one using the dynamesh tool. Areas were masked off where detail needed to be preserved, and the entire model was smoothed, leaving mechanical features intact.
