Edit 2: 27 Dec, 2019, After completing the next assembly, the starter engaging mechanism, I have found that the bevel gear had an error in it relating to the angle of teeth. I have uploaded a new file as well as step and iges copies that you can use to overwrite the previous one.Edit: 24 Nov, 2018, I've uploaded IGES and STEP models for those who can't open SolidWorks files. I can't guarantee the colors will be right.During World War II Packard Motor Cars received a license from the British luxury car manufacturer to manufacture it's famed V-12 known as the Merlin 66 in America for use in US warplanes. The result was the Packard V-1650, one of the most well known and most popular aircraft engines used in US aircraft (which isn't to say the Merlin wasn't equally famous). I am toying around with modeling the V-1650 just for fun. The original Packard blueprints have been scanned in high resolution and been made publicly available at www.AircorpsLibrary.com. That's a great site for guys who like to model aircraft related stuff, they have hundreds of thousands of original blueprints for a few dozen different airframes. To be fair, I am affiliated, but personally I still think it is a great site and well worth the minimal cost of $5 a month. This is a complete model of the starter motor, assembly 620740 for the V-1650-7, which is the version used in the P-51 Mustang. The Aircorps drawings are missing two drawings, 600307 and 600312 which detail the windings for the starter motor armature, if anyone has info on them I would appreciate anything you could share. The other thing I am missing is the nameplate, I will probably add that in later as it is a very tedious part to make. I will continue to publish the model as I work on it, unless I can get my hands on some Pratt & Whitney Double Wasp blueprints, in which case I'll probably put this on hold for a while and do that. But until that happens, enjoy this little time waster of mine.Let me know what you guys think.
