Mount Hope started out as a summer retreat for four generations of the Grubb family, a pioneering American iron master family that had migrated from England in search of riches. The land that would eventually become the Estate was purchased by Peter Grubb in 1779 and an iron furnace was established at Mount Hope in 1784. His son, Henry Bates Grubb, built the original Federal Period Mansion between 1800-1805. During this same period, the formal gardens surrounding the mansion were meticulously designed featuring a stunning array of trees, an impressive grand avenue of vibrant flowers and intricately pillared entrances to the Estate's various stone pathways. These beautifully crafted features continue to thrive today. The picturesque Mount Hope Estate serves as a serene backdrop for numerous outdoor celebrations and indoor theatrical performances throughout the year. Stay up-to-date on this year's exciting upcoming events.
