The PROM-1 is a Yugoslavian-manufactured anti-personnel mine that explodes on impact. Its cylindrical body contains a pronged fuze inserted at the top, similar to the German S-mine in operation. The mine triggers when the prongs are tilted by direct pressure or tension on a tripwire attached to them. This tilting allows one of three striker-retaining balls to escape, releasing the spring-loaded striker that fires the propellant charge. The explosion forces the upper half of the mine body out of the ground and into the air, shearing off brass screws and leaving the base plug behind. The wire tethering the mine's body to its base unwinds as it rises, pulling the detonator assembly downwards when it reaches 65 centimeters in height. This triggers the main explosive charge, shattering the internally grooved body into high-velocity steel fragments that spray in all directions. The PROM-1 is lethal at relatively long distances, projecting dangerous fragments up to 100 meters or more. Its potentially lethal range is around 50 meters, and it will almost certainly kill or seriously injure anyone within 30 meters of the blast. Wearing standard kevlar body armor offers no guarantee of safety against this mine's large number of fragments. A PROM-1 buried with only its prongs visible can be particularly hard to spot in undergrowth because most of the mine is underground and cannot be seen. However, using a mine detector may strike the prongs or connected tripwire, detonating the mine. In a minefield, PROM-1s may be surrounded by other types of minimum metal antipersonnel blast mines, hindering clearance. The PROM-1 is difficult to render safe because its fuze becomes unstable after several years of exposure to weather. Deminers recommend destroying this mine in situ by detonating an explosive charge next to it. Trip-wires measuring 20 feet or 6 meters in length are usually fitted to this mine to increase its activation area. When tracking trip-wires back to their source, deminers must keep in mind that other landmines may be planted along its length. The PROM-1 has been found in various countries, including Angola, Bosnia, Chile, Croatia, Eritrea, Iraq, Kosovo, Mozambique, and Namibia.
