The P-51 Mustang, an American single-seat fighter-bomber, served in World War II, the Korean War, and other conflicts. Initially equipped with the Allison V-1710 engine, its high-altitude performance was limited. First operated by the RAF as a tactical reconnaissance aircraft and fighter-bomber (Mustang Mk I), it later gained improved performance when fitted with a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine.
