Decorative knife to paper Nr inv.: NMM/DP/26/23 Dimensions: Length 410 mm Material: Wood Origin: Gift Period of creation: XIX-XX century. Description: Decorative tool, resembling a small machete, carved from a piece of dark wood. Handle in the shape of a kneeling woman. The knife was probably created in Africa, fitting into the trend of local folk art. It is one of the mementos of Karol Olgierd Borchardt (1905-1986). Unique items belonging to the popular writer, sailor, and captain of large ships are located on the Sailboat-Museum "Dar Pomorza" in Gdynia. Karol O. Borchardt graduated from the Tczew Maritime School. In 1936 he was promoted to captain. On the "Dar Pomorza", he began his service in 1938 as deputy commander of the sailing ship. In August 1939, he sailed on the "Dar Pomorza" for a school voyage, which he was unable to return to Poland due to the outbreak of World War II. During the war, he was twice seriously injured. He was awarded the Cross of Valor. He returned to Poland in 1949.
