OX CNC Variant - V Slot/C Beam Hybrid
grabcad
I recently purchased a kit that saved me approximately £100 on the Bill of Materials (BOM) for my CNC router project; I have added a photo of it. Interestingly, the cost of the kit increased by £100 the day after I bought it, a fortunate occurrence. The kit has nearly the same dimensions as my design. After building a controller and developing a stepper driver, I found it more cost-effective to buy motor drivers. If anyone is interested, I would be happy to share how I drive it and the tools/software used. So far, the performance has been impressive. Having researched extensively on building a CNC router, I concluded that the Openbuilds.com V Slot system offered an ideal balance between affordability and precision/ease of build for my budget. However, I preferred the new C Beam extrusions over the custom gantry plate design. To minimize wear on wheels, I opted not to use the 'internal' C Beam mini V components. I decided to create a model of a C Beam/V Slot "OX" hybrid with leadscrews and enhanced stiffness compared to standard V slot OX machines available in the market. All parts for this mechanical model can be sourced from openbuildspartstore.com. The BOM includes steppers and a spindle, which are not costed but necessary to ensure proper center of mass and spindle alignment within the Y-axis footprint. Most individual parts come from the Openbuilds IGES library available at openbuilds.com, as well as Randy Wetzler's C Beam variant. Despite some cost variations, the final BOM turned out to be more affordable than anticipated but slightly higher than hoped. Please note that the BOM cost is subject to change over time.
