The Overwatch League is modeled after traditional North American professional sports leagues, featuring a set of permanent teams and regular season play instead of the promotion and relegation system used in other eSports competitions. Each team franchise has an owner backing it up, and players signed to the team can expect a minimum annual salary, benefits, and a share of winnings and revenue based on their team's performance during the season. The League was unveiled in November 2016, with the first twelve teams being established within a year from that. The inaugural season kicked off regular season play in January 2018, running through June 2018, followed by playoffs and an All-Star weekend scheduled for July. A massive prize pool of US$3.5 million is available to teams competing in the first season.
