Oversize Hand with Articulated Fingers
thingiverse
Due to overwhelming public demand, I'm thrilled to announce that my custom-built articulated fingers used on my Starcraft 2 Jim Raynor suit are now available for public purchase! As a bonus, I've just released the PDF flat pattern files for the arm and hand pieces that attach to them. The design is based on 1/4 inch thick ABS sheet. This comprehensive set of files includes everything needed for a complete hand, with the index finger and ring finger sharing the same files. Each finger features a base, middle section, and tip, including the thumb. Additionally, I've included the mounts that attach nicely to a 1/4 inch sheet of ABS plastic, just like the final product. To achieve smooth articulation, you'll need either rubber bands or a 1/4 inch wide fabric elastic that runs along the back side of each finger. You'll also require several yards of 1/8 inch paracord or similar to run down the inner length of each finger, using the loop at the tip as an anchor. I used 1/2 inch ABS plastic dowels to connect all the sections together at the joints, but wood can be a suitable alternative. Assemble each half of the finger, then attach the cord and elastic before gluing the two halves together using the dowels for alignment. Don't forget to include the finger tabs that you'll use to tie the paracord ends and slip your fingers through for control over the hand. A finer resolution will also minimize sanding requirements. I printed mine at .5mm resolution, but a thinner setting would be even better. Post-Printing: Small holes or slots will need to be drilled in the designated areas for elastics or rubber bands, depending on your chosen method of attachment.
