Overly complicated cell phone holder for car
thingiverse
This is a smartphone holder whose design has been gradually refined over many years, across two different smartphones and two distinct vehicles. The final design showcased here is likely much more intricate than a standard smartphone holder demands, yet it incorporates some impressive features that justify its complexity. The smartphone holder's position can be adjusted along three independent axes, with friction ratchets integrated into the joints to ensure it maintains the set position securely. Additionally, I aimed to make the X and Y axes converge at the phone's center to prevent sagging over time. This smartphone holder secures itself to the center post between the dashboard vents on my current Honda Fit without obstructing the vents significantly. It is possible that this design can be adapted for use in other types of vehicles as well. The smartphone holder is specifically designed for a Samsung S10 with a rubber protective case, but its adjustable arms allow it to accommodate a wide variety of smartphones. I used NylonX for printing the version in my car, except for the 'Cushion' parts which I printed out of TPU. NylonX might have been overkill, as the initial tests with PLA showed significant warping over several hot summer days. It's recommended to use a material that is resistant to high temperatures and reasonably strong. To print this smartphone holder, you will need: 2x Claw Cushion (TPU or similar) 2x Claw Half 1x Crossbeam 2x Fork Side Arm 1x Phone Holder Back 4x Phone Holder Cushion (TPU or similar) 1x Phone Holder Left 1x Phone Holder Right 1x Right Angle Joint 1x Vertical Post Additionally, you will require two bolts or machine screws to function as hinges in the claw and a compression spring that goes between the two halves of the claw, through the hole in the vertical post, to apply pressure to the claw.
