
Overhead Crane Gearbox

We were tasked to create a gearbox for a double glider crane by designing it from scratch using given load and torque values. We began by determining the number and teeth size of gears based on load applied at the drum, and subsequently calculated shaft size and selected suitable bearings from a catalogue. The project taught us essential steps, assumptions, calculation methods, and material selection for crane design, as well as stress management to ensure machine longevity. Despite challenges, collaborating with our group members was enjoyable and insightful, and we achieved the objective by designing a gearbox with a safety factor of 2.
