An overhead crane, commonly referred to as a bridge crane, is a type of industrial crane found in various manufacturing environments. An overhead crane consists of parallel runways with a traveling bridge that spans the gap between them. The hoist, which handles the lifting component of the crane, moves along the bridge itself. If the bridge is securely supported on two or more legs running on a fixed rail at ground level, the crane is classified as either a gantry crane (as per ASME B30 standards in the USA) or a goliath crane (according to BS 466 guidelines in the UK). Unlike mobile cranes used for construction purposes or other types of lifting equipment, overhead cranes are typically utilized in manufacturing or maintenance settings where efficiency and downtime are crucial considerations.
