Strategically located east of Provadia, Ovech Fortress perches on a mountain plateau above the present-day town, aptly known as "Citadel." Constructed by the Byzantines, the fortress operated from the IVth century until the early VIIth, marking nearly a century without activity. Revival began in the XIth and concluded towards the end of XVII, yet before the fortification's establishment, archaeological evidence points to Thracian presence. Sadly, Ovech fell under the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, whereas its other namesakes include Provat or Provaton among Byzantines, Tash Hisar (stone castle) with Bulgarians and Turks, and Burfanta in historical records of the XIIth century.
