The standard HobbyKing Outlaw 180 comes with 23mm aluminum posts that screw into the legs with one screw, making them prone to bending when landing unevenly. These posts are slung under the frame, preventing removal and causing damage upon initial landing on a single leg. Replacing these posts with wider and stronger mounts secured by zip ties effectively distributes forces, resulting in a more stable setup suitable for applications requiring approximately 23mm of lift. The thin cover of the flight controller is about 18-20 mm away from the bottom of the arms, which are about 20mm wide (more when zip tied). This design helps handle landing force at an angle. A channel runs along the center to prevent motor wire fouling. This solution works exceptionally well. When flying aggressively like I do, hitting many planets is common. Not even a propeller was damaged, thanks in part to the use of carbon fiber props. PLA at 195 degrees on blue tape platform, one layer at a time to avoid stringing or platform damage due to movement between sections of a layer. Cura slicer was used. Post-Printing Stock posts were straightened multiple times but are now starting to crack, prompting the installation of new pads. A full set of pads has been installed. How I Designed This The design was created in Tinkercad. Notes about the HobbyKing Outlaw 180 - Flaw as delivered Another flaw exists beyond the issue with the posts - the nylon 5" props supplied by HobbyKing flex too much and hit the camera mount. Carbon fiber 5" blades have resolved this problem. A set of 4x4.5x3 nylon props is being considered for testing after managing to break these current props.
